The steering parts aisle

Eight parts move your steering wheel input out to the front tires. Know what each one does before you shop for it.

The steering chain, in order

On a truck with a steering box, the wheel turns a shaft into the box. The box turns the pitman arm, which pushes a drag link (or a centerlink on many independent front ends), and tie rods connect to the steering knuckles. On a solid front axle, a track bar keeps the axle centered under the frame.

Solid axle or independent front?

MotorTrend explains that on independent front suspension, the tie rods usually come off a rack-and-pinion or a centerlink with an idler arm, while solid-axle 4x4s use a drag link and tie rod. Your front-end type decides which parts you will buy, so start there.

Questions

Which steering part wears out first?

There is no single answer. Joints (tie rod ends and ball sockets) and track bar bushings are wear items, so inspect them first, but have the whole system checked.
