Types
Borgeson's catalog describes telescoping/collapsible shafts and needle-bearing U-joints for steering. Federal truck rules (49 CFR 393.209) say universal joints in the steering system must not be worn, faulty or repaired by welding, and the same is good practice on any vehicle.
What to compare
- Input and output splines and sizes: match exactly.
- A collapsible or telescoping design where the vehicle had one.
- Joint angles within the maker's limits, plus support bearings where needed.
- Clearance to exhaust and headers (heat).
Questions
Can a worn U-joint cause play in the steering wheel?
Yes. Check the shaft joints when you look for steering play, along with the box and linkage.
