Frequently asked questions

Short answers, each backed by a full page.

Is this site a parts store?

No. It is a buyer's guide. For Ram trucks we link to Dodge Off Road, which builds Ram steering and suspension. For other brands we give general advice without store links.

Do you list part numbers or specs?

No. Specs, part numbers and torque values come from your vehicle and part maker. We never invent them.

Is it affiliated with Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan or Stellantis?

No. Brand names are used only to say which vehicles a section covers.

Which steering part wears out first?

There is no single answer. Joints (tie rod ends and ball sockets) and track bar bushings are wear items, so inspect them first, but have the whole system checked.

Is a bigger tie rod always better?

No. It must also clear everything through travel and full lock, and the joints and hardware must match its strength. A strong bar on weak joints just moves the weak point.

What is bump steer?

The steering moving by itself as the suspension moves. It is common when the drag link and track bar are not close to parallel.

Can I adjust out play in a steering box?

Some boxes have an adjustment, but the maker's procedure must be followed. Over-tightening can make the steering bind. First check that the play isn't in the joints or track bar.

Will a high-flow pump fix heavy steering?

Not by itself, and too much flow or pressure for the gear can cause problems. Find the cause first, and match any pump to the gear maker's spec.

Will a new stabilizer stop death wobble?

Usually it only hides it. Inspect the track bar, joints, ball joints and wheel bearings, and fix what is worn.

Do I need an adjustable track bar after a lift?

Usually, because a lift moves the axle off-center. Follow your lift maker's instructions.

Will a brace fix a cracked frame?

No. A crack has to be repaired properly first. A brace helps reduce flex afterward.

Can a worn U-joint cause play in the steering wheel?

Yes. Check the shaft joints when you look for steering play, along with the box and linkage.

Is DOM stronger than solid?

Not at the same diameter and steel. Solid is stronger. A larger-diameter DOM tube can be stiffer and lighter, so compare whole parts, not labels.

Are Heim joints street legal?

It depends on your state, and the rules are unclear in many places. MotorTrend warns they may fail yearly inspections. Ask your state inspection authority.

What does center to center mean?

The distance between the centers of the two joints at the ends of a rod, measured with the wheels straight.

What is the most common Ram steering upgrade after a lift?

Usually an adjustable track bar and stronger linkage, plus a box brace on older trucks. Inspect first; buy for what your truck needs.
